Mohs micrographic surgery is a safe and highly effective technique used to remove skin cancers under complete microscopic control. In Mohs surgery, a layer of skin is removed around the visible cancer. 100% of the tissue margin in the sample is then examined under the microscope using detailed maps of the affected area to be sure all of the cancer roots are gone. If any cancer remains, the affected area is again sampled, and the entire process is repeated until the cancer is totally removed.
By using the mapping technique and complete microscopic control, the Mohs surgeon can pinpoint areas involved with cancer that are otherwise invisible to the naked eye. Therefore, even the smallest microscopic roots of cancer can be removed.
Benefits of Mohs Surgery:
- The ability to save as much normal skin as possible
- The highest possibility for curing the cancer.
- In contrast, standard surgery techniques look at <1% of the sample tissue margins, providing only an estimate of whether the margins are clear.
With standard surgery, the samples are not examined the same day. This can lead to having surgery at a later time after finding a positive margin in an outside pathology lab.
