Pen Bay Medical Center has been committed to a patient- and family-centered approach to care in since 2010. At that time, a patient and family advisory council was formed to give patients and families a voice in decisions affecting patient care and family experiences at Pen Bay Medical Center. The Pen Bay Partners in Care Council (PBPCC), now entering its fourth year, serves to highlight the partnership between patients, families and our hospital.
The Council meets monthly, and includes community representatives from Knox and Waldo County as well as liaisons from Pen Bay Medical Center. In the past three years, the council has had an important role making changes at Pen Bay, including: suggestions for improving the patient billing experience, improvements in the Emergency Department and increasing healthy food choices in vending machines.
Through clinical research, doctors find new ways to treat medical conditions and diseases. A research study helps to find out if a new drug or treatment is effective. During a research study, volunteers test these new methods while being carefully watched by a doctor.
We are looking for volunteers for several of our research studies.

Gold Seal of Approval from The Joint Commission
The Joint Commission accreditation is recognized nationwide as a symbol of quality that reflects an organization’s commitment to meeting certain performance standards. To earn and maintain The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval™, an organization must undergo an on-site survey by a Joint Commission survey team at least every three years.
Commission on Cancer
Pen Bay Cancer Care is accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. The Commission on Cancer (CoC) is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to improving survival and quality of life for cancer patients through standard-setting, prevention, research, education, and the monitoring of comprehensive quality care. Pen Bay Cancer Care received a Silver Accreditation Award for six Commendations and no Contingencies. The CoC survey extends till 2017. Learn more about our Cancer Care Center >>
Pulmonary Rehabilitation Services at Pen Bay Medical Center received full recertification by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR) in 2014. Pen Bay Medical Center was recognized for its commitment to providing and improving the quality of life by enhancing high quality standards of care. AACVPR Program Certification is valid for three years through 2017.
The prestigious American Diabetes Association Education Recognition Certificate for a quality diabetes self-management education program was awarded to the Pen Bay Healthcare Diabetes and Nutrition Care Center program. The program recognition is valid for four years through 2019 and has been continuously awarded since 2003. The American Diabetes Association believes that this program offers high-quality education that is an essential component of effective diabetes treatment. Read the full press release here.
