This page includes basic information about a Sleep Study at the Pen Bay Center for Sleep Medicine. For answers to your specific questions, please call and speak with us personally.

WHAT WE MONITOR

We place more than 20 electrodes and monitoring devices to watch you sleep.

We see if you're sleeping the way you should and if you're not, we can see most reasons why your sleep is being interrupted.  Things we monitor include:

  • How deep your sleep is
  • Your breathing and effort
  • Oxygen levels
  • Leg movements
  • Heart rhythm
  • Sleep position

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE STUDY

Each screen we look at is 30 seconds of time and we collect more than 700 screens of data for each person.

Each study is labeled to include:

  • How deep your sleep is
  • When you awake or arouse from sleep
  • if your legs twitch
  • If your breathing becomes shallow or stops
  • If your oxygen level drops below normal
  • Irregular heartbeats

A copy of your data and a report is given to a doctor specializing in sleep for his review. He then interprets the study and suggests treatment options best for you.

WHAT TO EXPECT

  • A sleep tech is monitoring your sleep all night and is available for questions or problems throughout your visit.
  • A bathroom is located right in your room and using the facilities is not a problem.
  • There is a television in your room.
  • We try to accommodate any requests or special needs you may have.
