Wound Healing Center
The Wound Healing Center at Pen Bay includes a team of certified ostomy and wound care nurses and a general surgeon who use a collaborative approach to diagnose, treat and heal complicated wounds. The team also provide coordinated wound care by consulting with specialists and making referrals for patient follow-up as needed.
The staff manage wounds that may be difficult or take a long time to heal (taking more than 4 weeks) including:
- Treatment of venous stasis ulcers
- Treatment of arterial ulcers
- Treatment of diabetic foot ulcers
- Treatment of non-healing surgical wounds
- Edema therapies
- Biopsies
- Total contact casting
- Compression wraps
- Ostomy care (ileostomies, urostomies or colostomies), including patient education, pre-operation, post-operation and perstomal complications
- Treatment of the flu from the Emergency department

The Wound Care Team consists of general surgeon Douglas Cole, MD and certified ostomy and wound care nurses Katy Genthner, RN, CWOCN, Kathy Nautel, RN, CWOCN and Karen Pier, RN, CWOCN, who have been specially trained to address the specific needs of wound center patients. The Wound Center is under the medical direction of Julie White, MD.
