Through the Mid-Coast Integrated Health Collaborative, therapists are placed in primary care offices. Patients are referred by their primary care doctor and then introduced to the therapist within the very same office. This is proving to be a very effective and efficient model and Mid-Coast Mental Health Center hopes to grow this program throughout the region.
At Pen Bay Healthcare, Pen Bay Pediatrics, Pen Bay Family Medicine, Pen Bay Internal Medicine and Waldoboro Family Medicine are linked to the Mid-Coast Integrated Health Collaborative.
Why is this model so successful?
Missy Cormier, program manager, said, "It breaks down barriers and removes the stigma of going to a mental health center while making it possible for us to coordinate services with the primary care physicians and provide really good clinical care."
The program employs four therapists, two psychiatrists and a psychiatric nurse practitioner who currently work in doctor's offices in Rockport, Rockland and Waldoboro.
"We meet patients where they are," Cormier said. "These are individuals who don't see themselves as mentally ill, but are struggling with some type of life issue - divorce, obesity, depression, grief and so on."
