Infusion Center
The Infusion Center at Pen Bay Medical Center is an outpatient specialty area designed specifically for adult patients who require medications given intravenously or through injection.
The nursing professionals are experienced in many types of intravenous therapy, including establishing intravenous access and the use and care of mediports and midline catheters.
Patients have the benefit of receiving their treatment in a safe, comfortable, relaxing environment with caring and experienced healthcare professionals. Directions to the Infusion Center To get to the the PBMC AntiCoagulation Unit, patients should use the hospital's main entrance, walk past the main reception desk, turn right at the first hallway and turn left again at the next corridor. The unit is on the main floor and stairs/elevators are not needed for access. What to Expect Patients are referred to the Infusion Center through either their primary care physician or a specialist. Every effort is made to accommodate the patient’s schedule when booking appointments. Our hours of operation range between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Special arrangements are made with the Emergency Department to provide infusions on Saturday and Sunday, if needed.
On the day of your infusion, report directly to the Infusion Center. You will not need to stop at the registration desk.
Upon arrival at the Infusion Center, you will be greeted by a staff member and shown to one of our four patient care areas – each complete with a comfortable recliner, a plasma television and a magnificent view of Penobscot Bay. Patients are welcome to bring a friend or family member with them. Cell phone use is permitted and wireless internet access is available for laptop computer use.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if I want privacy or to nap? Patient care areas are separated by adjustable curtains. There is a separate room with a hospital bed for those with longer stays or a greater need for privacy. What if my treatment takes a long time? The recliners are large and adjustable, rendering them suitable for long-term use. Meals may be ordered from the cafeteria for those patients staying through meal time. Pillows and warm blankets are available for comfort if needed, and bathroom facilities are readily accessible. What if I am anxious or have difficulty with IVs? We offer patients an anesthetic of Lidocaine that is given subdermally (just under the skin) before starting the IV. This treatment often significantly reduces the discomfort associated with IV starts.
Patients in the Infusion Center sit in large, comfortable recliner chairs that have been designed just for this purpose, or they can arrange to use the center's private infusion room, if they prefer.
