Classroom Descriptions
Penobscot Bay Medical Center Creative Learning and Childcare Center PRECIOUS BUNDLES "Infants" [8 babies; adult ratio 1:4; ages 6 weeks to 12-15 months] Our nursery provides a warm, nurturing environment for babies. We provide plenty of opportunities for one-on-one TLC, active play with stimulating toys, quiet spaces for rest and relaxation, and time for growth and development of various skills. Routines for daily living are established, and a variety of experiences are offered. These little ones will learn to walk, use a spoon and sippy cup, and start to talk while in our nursery. Young infants follow their own eating and sleeping patterns, and we welcome nursing Moms, as well as parents who may want to visit during the day. Parent communication and involvement is highly encouraged as we get to know your baby and how best to meet his/her needs. In preparation for promotion to Busy Bees, older babies transition to the same two snacks, lunch, and nap routines that structure the day in the rest of the Center. Daily notes keep parents informed of sleeping, eating, and changing information, as well as give a sense of your child’s overall daily experiences. BUSY BEES "Toddlers" [10 children; adult ratio 1:5; ages 12 - 15 months to 2-1/2 years] In our toddler room children are offered ample opportunities for play and discovery while teachers facilitate learning in all areas of development. Whether children are running or playing ball, painting or building with blocks, singing or listening to a story, learning is occurring at a rapid pace at this age. Social skills, such as sharing, manners, and playing with others are introduced and encouraged daily. Toddlers are also learning self-help skills including feeding themselves, putting their toys away, and recognizing their cubbies and personal items such as coats, blankets, etc. Their individual personalities are developing. Each child is special and unique. Normal, but sometimes upsetting behavior to both parent and child can include difficulties saying good-bye, biting, tantrums and inability to share. We help the child and parents work through these actions and emotions. We encourage the children to use words to express themselves as they are able and we redirect children to other activities when necessary. The daily schedule for Busy Bees is both structured to provide an important sense of routine for children and flexible to allow for individual needs to be met. The basic daily routine is as follows: Arrival, Inside Playtime, Morning Snack, Outside Playtime, Lunch (11:15), Rest Time (12:00), Quiet Playtime, Afternoon Snack, Inside Playtime, Outside Playtime, Departure. CURIOUS CORNER "Young Preschoolers" [14 children; adult ratio 1:7; ages 2-1/2 to 3-1/2 years old] In Curious Corner, children make the transition from toddlers to young preschoolers. These young preschoolers are developing self-help skills such as independence in managing snacks and lunch as well as drinking from a cup. When the child is ready, we also work with parents on toilet training. This is done on an individual basis according to the specific needs of each child. The classroom is set up to create a more structured environment than that of the toddler room, providing interest areas for block play, art, dramatic play, science and discovery, games and puzzles, reading and writing, computers, and sensory exploration. Children are given opportunities to make choices based on their interests and abilities while teachers integrate content learning into all aspects of their day. Through careful observation by teachers, specific studies emerge, and teachers facilitate ongoing, deeper investigations of identified topics of interest. Children also participate in large group meetings and storytimes throughout the day and play outside daily (weather permitting). The daily schedule in Curious Corner is: Arrival, Choice Time, Outside Play, Group Meeting, Morning Snack, Choice & Small Groups, Story Time, Lunch (11:15), Rest and Quiet Time (12:00), Choice Time, Afternoon Snack, Story Time, Outside Play, Departure. MAGIC MOMENTS "Older Preschoolers" [20 children; adult ratio 1:10; ages 3-1/2 to pre-kindergarten age 5] In Magic Moments, children continue to develop the skills they need to be independent and prepare for future learning in kindergarten and beyond. Children learn most effectively through play, so we provide children with ample opportunities to explore and investigate the world around them while teachers take care to integrate content learning into their daily experiences.
