Key features of the plan include training and adoption of the process by medical staff; bedside electronic documentation of medications administered to patients, and electronic nursing documentation.

This is a three-year plan that will move the organization closer to a paperless medical record system, making patient medical records available to every caregiver within the Pen Bay Healthcare System. It will improve patient safety by allowing every caregiver instant access to patient records to check medications, obtain laboratory reports, radiology reports, as well as instant access to physician and nursing notes or physical therapy and occupational therapy notes.

In future plans, an electronic medical records system allows facilities off the Pen Bay Healthcare grounds, such as the Vinalhaven Islands Community Medical Center to access patient records and share the services of the Pen Bay Healthcare System more readily.
