Memory Walker  Local Walk Raises More Than $6,300 to
Fight Alzheimer's Disease

More than 120 Alzheimer's Champions from the Midcoast were on the move to end Alzheimer's disease on Sept. 26 at the annual Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk® hosted by the Knox Center. More than $6,300 was raised to fund Alzheimer's care, support and research.

New to this year's walk were Lucy and Bandit, two adorable canines from the Camden-Rockport Area Rescue League, who were on hand to walk for a cause and to look for a home.

"We appreciated the opportunity to participate in the Midcoast Memory Walk," said Sarah Shepherd, CRARL executive director. "The Camden-Rockport Animal Rescue League is an integral part of the Midcoast region and we like to collaborate and show our support for other community organizations. The shelter's two canine residents, Lucy and Bandit, definitely enjoyed the outing and the long walk in the beautiful weather! A special thank you to Diane Sturgeon, CRARL volunteer, for walking Bandit."

"It is very encouraging that so many Midcoast residents became champions in the fight against Alzheimer's disease at this year's Memory Walk," said Sarah Stepp, an Alzheimer's Association spokesperson. "With funds raised at this year's Walk, the Alzheimer's Association will provide much needed care and support to people touched by the disease as well as research to fight Alzheimer's disease."

There are as many as 5.3 million people currently living with the disease in America. In Maine alone, there are 30,000. It is estimated that someone in America develops Alzheimer's disease every 71 seconds; by mid-century, someone will develop Alzheimer's disease every 33 seconds.
