Parkinson's Support Group Announces Fall Programs The area's Parkinson's Disease Support Group promises continued fellowship and learning this fall, with a series of monthly meetings beginning in October. The group meets on the first Tuesday of each month, from noon to 1:30 p.m., at the Anderson Inn at Quarry Hill Retirement Community in Camden; participation is free and open to all those living with Parkinson's, as well as their family members, friends, and caregivers. The support group's Oct. 7 meeting will be devoted to a review of "Cognitive Changes in Parkinson's Disease." Group cofacilitator Amy Jensen, RN, BSN, will explain how Parkinson's alters brain function; and University of Maine cognitive neuroscientist Dr. Shawn Ell will discuss recent research in the field. He will also tell how people with Parkinson's can take part in ongoing studies. On Nov. 4, nurses from the Camden District Nursing Association will administer flu shots exclusively for support group members. Medicare covers the cost of the vaccinations, and Camden District Nursing will do the billing. Participants should bring their Medicare cards to the meeting; those without Medicare coverage will be asked to pay $20 to receive immunization. The group's fall series will conclude on Dec. 2 with a celebration of the holidays, including a sing-a-long and sharing of holiday goodies. Support group meetings are free. Attendees are encouraged to bring a bag lunch to each midday meeting; Quarry Hill provides beverages and desserts.
