New Pediatrician, Dr. Sam Lew,
Joins PBMC Medical Staff
Dr. Sam Wei Lew has joined the active medical staff of Penobscot BayMedical Center in Rockport. He is assuming the pediatrics practice of Dr. Alison Faulkingham.
Dr. Lew comes to our area from Machias, where he was chief of Pediatric Services at Down East Community Hospital. He is also a consultant in pediatric oncology for Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.
“My aim is to establish a practice where families can feel that there is a medical home for them,” said Dr. Lew. “A pediatrician is there to keep families healthy and for the ‘lumps and bumps’ of childhood.
Dr. Lew received his medical degree from the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Denver, completed his residency in pediatrics at Los Angeles County/USC Medical Center, and received a fellowship in pediatric hematology/oncology from the Naval Hospital in San Diego. He is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric hematology/oncology.
“The practice of pediatrics is very rewarding every day,” said Dr. Lew. “Through medical school, pediatrics was one of my favorite rotations.” He volunteered for the U.S. Navy in 1979, in part because his father had served in the Navy during the Second World War, and achieved the rank of lieutenant commander in the Medical Corps. He rejoined civilian life in 1985 and went to work for the KaiserFoundation Hospital in San Diego.
Dr. Lew is married and has four grown children. His wife, Marti, is an operating room nurse by profession. Until their move to Washington, Me., she was managing the OR at Down East Community Hospital. She is also an enthusiastic quilter.
The Lews are looking forward to life on their new 14-acre farm in Washington. Dr. Lew is an avid horseman and is particularly interested in training horses for therapeutic riding. He plans to volunteer for the Freedom Riders in Warren, which provides educational and therapeutic horseback programs for physically, mentally and emotionally challenged individuals. The Lews are also considering raising sheep for pet therapy as well as for wool.
“I am interested in the many ways that animals can help children,” said Dr. Lew. “I am especially interested in autism and the benefits of animal therapy for autistic children.”
Dr. Lew’s office is at 1056 Commercial Street (Route One) in Rockport. The telephone number is 596-6722.
