Quarry Hill Honors Volunteers

Quarry Hill Retirement Community honored more than 75 area citizens, including dozens of its own residents, at volunteer-recognition brunches held on April 29 and May 2 in Camden.

A tradition observed each year in conjunction with National Volunteer Week, the events celebrate those who donate their time and talents in support of Quarry Hill activities and programs. Marketing Director Denise Pease said the week underscores the importance of working together to meet challenges.

"Your individual contributions, however, great or small, help make Quarry Hill…as great as we all want it to be. Each of you truly makes up the heart of our community," Pease said.

Quarry Hill Activities Director Noreen Clark praised, in particular, the members of the Ladies Auxiliary, whose fundraising efforts have benefited Midcoast residents, at Quarry Hill and elsewhere, since the 1940s.

Clark also recognized volunteer Diane Kirkman of Camden, a recent recipient of an Exemplary Service Award presented by Maine Governor John Baldacci. For the past eight years, Clark said, Kirkman has been a frequent visitor to Quarry Hill, sharing tea, music, movies, and conversation with assisted-living residents and "making each one feel special."

Following a buffet meal, volunteers at both events received gift bags stuffed with healthy treats. Rockland resident Jim Flanagan entertained on the piano.
