Kno-Wal-Lin Home Care and Hospice is collaborating with Mid-Coast Mental Health Center to launch a Volunteer Friends Program. The program will match selected MCMHC clients with volunteers from the community.

These volunteers will provide supportive friendships to help combat the effects of loneliness, low self-esteem and isolation.

“Through this program, you can do simple things like going for a walk, seeing a movie or just making a phone call to someone in need of a friend,” said Joy Chamberlin, Volunteer Coordinator, KWL and coordinator for the Volunteer Friends Program.  “Friends can be the best medicine for a person who is striving for good mental health. If you can spare an hour a week, you might consider joining this revitalized program.”

Some possible activities:

  • Playing cards or other games
  • Going to the movies
  • Listening and sharing stories
  • Going out for coffee or a snack
  • Going to the library
  • Shopping
  • Walking a pet
  • Listening to music
  • Going for a ride in the country
  • Taking a walk on the beach
    ...and being a good listener.
