Free Viewing of Documentary “The Hungry Heart”

June 14 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

| Free

The National Institute on Drug Abuse has formally recognized that an epidemic of opioid dependence has emerged in the United States involving prescription pain medications and heroin. Northern New England is an area of the country especially affected by this epidemic. The Picker Family Resource Center, McLean Hospital and The American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry and Kingdom County Productions invite you to a free program about the current epidemic on Saturday, June 14, at 2 p.m. at the Strand Theatre in Rockland.

The program is designed to promote community awareness and to demonstrate best medical practices for addressing the opioid dependence epidemic to save and restore lives. It will include an introduction by Dr. Frederick Goggans, chair of Pen Bay Medical Center’s Department of Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine; a presentation by Dr. Hilary S. Connery, clinical director of alcohol and drug treatment at McLean Hospital, explaining the current scope of the opioid dependence problem and available treatments and a screening of the documentary film “The Hungry Heart,” followed by a Q&A session about the film with filmmakers Bess O’Brien and Jay Craven of Kingdom Productions.

“The Hungry Heart” provides a look at the world of prescription drug addiction through the world of Dr. Fred Holmes, a Vermont pediatrician who works with patients struggling with this addiction. The movie shows the many faces and diverse populations of addiction and their continued search for a life of recovery.
